THOMAS ALFRED ALLAN
SERVICE NO. 2038939
Army: Lance Corporal
4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards, Royal Armoured Corps landed at intervals from about 07:25 on D-Day, on King Green and King Red sectors, Gold Beach.
Two of the regiment's squadrons ('B' and 'C' Squadrons) were equipped with Sherman DD amphibious tanks, which were launched at sea and swam the last distance to the beach under their own power.
They were supporting the assaulting infantry: 'B' Squadron supported 6th Battalion, Green Howards, and 'C' Squadron supported 5th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment. 'A' Squadron had standard Sherman tanks and landed about an hour later in support of 7th Battalion, Green Howards.
The regiment experienced some trouble in getting off the beach but then advanced to La Rivière and pushed inland from there. German opposition was mainly in isolated pockets and snipers. The exact circumstances of his death are unknown.
STORY
This story is shared by the Trust with kind permission from Mavis Williams, Researcher.
Thomas Alfred Allan was born in 1919 and baptised in St Mary's Church, Princes Road, Lambeth. He was the youngest son of Arthur & Eleanor Elizabeth Allan (née Willmott). Eleanor, in her young life, had seen a lot of grief as 9 of her siblings had died, out of a family of 13 children, as shown on the 1911 census. She had also lost her father, who had been killed when working as a stone sawyer at Littlehampton Railway Station. He was in the act of crossing the line for a bucket of water and, in seeking to get out of the way of a passing train, he was knocked down by a shunting train.
