Schools like yours are becoming Guardians of the British Normandy Memorial.\u00a0Their support is critical to protecting and preserving the memory of the 22,442\u00a0servicemen and women who sacrificed their lives for our freedom on D-Day and\u00a0during the Normandy campaign of WW2.<\/p>\n
Why the Memorial needs School Guardians<\/strong> The United Kingdom finally has a permanent National Memorial in Northern France\u00a0that records in one place the names of all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for\u00a0the liberty we enjoy today.<\/p>\n The British Normandy Memorial overlooking Gold Beach was officially opened on 6 June 2021 by the then Prince of Wales.<\/p>\n It is a place of national importance, of serene and quiet contemplation where we can\u00a0look back with gratitude and reflect on the lessons of the past, so that this and future\u00a0generations may apply those lessons to the present.<\/p>\n It is a place of remembrance for the last survivors of those events and the families of\u00a0those who died in Normandy in 1944 – and where many thousands of others, now\u00a0and in the future, will be able to remember and to pass on the legacy of\u00a0remembrance to future generations.<\/p>\n Your annual support of the Memorial will ensure the preservation\u00a0and protection of the Memorial so that your generation and all\u00a0those who follow, will never forget that greatest generation.<\/strong><\/p>\n How to become a School Guardian<\/strong> Funds could be raised through students\u2019 inventiveness, creativity, and talents from\u00a0initiatives such as sponsored challenge events, bake sales, dress-down days etc.\u00a0The Normandy Memorial Trust will be on hand to support and promote your\u00a0activities.<\/p>\n Your school will receive a Guardian certificate signed by Chairman of Trustees Lord Richard Dannatt.<\/p>\n Students will be encouraged to learn more about the people behind the names on\u00a0the Memorial \u2013 details of which can be accessed via the Normandy digital visitor\u00a0App.<\/p>\n Through the App you will be able to:<\/strong><\/p>\n Search the Roll of Honour –<\/strong> Discover stories behind the names<\/strong> The coastline<\/strong> On behalf of the Trustees and the remaining members of the Normandy Veteran\u00a0community, thank you for considering your support to perpetuate the memory of the fallen.<\/p>\n
\nD-Day, 6 June 1944, is a date synonymous with all that is best: the indomitable spirit\u00a0of a generation which would not be defeated; the courage and selflessness of the\u00a0many thousands who took part in or made possible the greatest amphibious landings\u00a0in history. Above all, it will be remembered with pride for centuries as the moment\u00a0when Britain with its Allies restored to western Europe a prize of incalculable value:\u00a0freedom.<\/p>\n
\nSchool Guardians commit to an annual donation of between \u00a31k-\u00a33k per annum by\u00a0direct debit for a minimum commitment of three years.<\/p>\n
